What Are the “Sticks” on the Back of Trucks?

If you’ve ever driven around and noticed long sticks or rods mounted on the back of trucks, you’re not alone. Many people are curious about what they actually do.

The Answer

Those “sticks” are typically mud flaps supports or safety markers, sometimes called truck whips. They serve several purposes:

  1. Protecting Other Vehicles – When trucks carry loose loads, mud, rocks, or debris can fly out from the tires. The rods help hold mud flaps in place to prevent this from hitting cars behind.
  2. Visibility – Some rods have reflective markers or lights on top. This helps smaller vehicles notice large trucks, especially at night or in bad weather.
  3. Compliance – In some regions, regulations require certain trucks to have these markers to warn others about overhanging parts or wide loads.

Fun Fact

Truck enthusiasts sometimes customize these rods with flags or lights, giving trucks a unique look while still serving a practical safety function.
